Marty Rhymes and Chairman Keith Rothra following the CD1 caucus at the RPT Convention.
Marty Rhymes and Keith Rothra received great honors during this year’s GOP state convention. During the June 9th session of the CD1 congressional caucus at the Texas GOP state convention, the delegates unanimously chose our chairman, Keith Rothra, to serve as an elector during the electoral college vote in December. Keith will be one of only 538 in the nation to cast an official ballot for the presidency. It is a great honor and privilege for Keith to be able to serve his country in this manner.
Before the call for elector nominations was completed, Keith’s son, John Rothra, approached the front, submitted the information to the caucus secretary, and then nominated his father for the position. Another delegate quickly seconded the motion, and a third immediately stood and motioned for nominations to be closed. Presiding officer Ashton Oravetz called twice more for nominations–required in the rules–then recognized the motion to close nominations. The delegation unanimously voted to close all nominations for elector, and then voted Keith Rothra as elector. But that was not the only highlight of the caucus.
Earlier in the meeting, Marty Rhymes was elected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. State Representative David Simpson nominated Marty, who was one of three nominated for CD1 delegate position three. Marty received a clear plurality of the votes in the first ballot, and then received a definitive majority in the runoff ballot.
Our party, our county, East Texas, and our state will be well represented by Keith and Marty in their upcoming roles. Congratulations to both of them for these honors!
